0

We have just released version 1.102  of MemSource Cloud, which is now available to all of our users. The are some of the improvements:

  • Optimized process of translation projects with hundreds of files (previously in some cases errors occurred)
  • Wildcard search is now available in our translation memory and term base search API (an important side effect is that the wildcard search is now available also from within MemSource Editor and starting with version 1.19, there is even a keyboard shortcut supporting this: Ctrl+Shift+K)
  • Our file converter server has been optimized for some rare, even “bizarre” versions of the different file formats that we support

And we have also introduced two MemSource Cloud editions that are completely free of charge: the Personal and Academic editions – more details on our pricing page. We will cover this soon, in a separate post.

Earlier today we have released version 1.102.7 of MemSource Cloud as well as version 1.21 of MemSource Editor. Both are minor releases.

The new version of MemSource Cloud brings improved import options for zip files and specifically addresses encoding issues related to file names in the zip file. Read more on importing zip files into MemSource on our wiki.

The new version of MemSource Editor fixes issues with some users not being able to connect to MemSource Cloud from the Editor.

As for version numbering of MemSource Cloud – we will stay for some time with the version 1.102 now,  as we are getting ready for a major release of MemSource Cloud 2.0. We will share more on this soon.

Presto, headquartered in Prague, the Czech Republic is a leading Czech translation agency, serving leading regional as well as international clients, among them: GE Money Bank, General Motors Southeast Europe, Henkel, Siemens, Telefónica, the European Court of Justice, European Parliament and others.

Presto has recently subscribed to MemSource Cloud.

Katerina Benova of the Presto translation technology department said: “We have first evaluated MemSource Cloud for two months with a non-trivial translation project that involved a team of 30 translators. Our project managers as well as translators found MemSource to be intuitive and easy to use. We were also quite impressed with the ability of MemSource to process files, which our legacy translation technology could not cope with.  The fact that MemSource Editor, the MemSource CAT tool, is available as a free download made things even easier. We were all very satisfied with the results and decided to subscribe to MemSource Cloud.”

David Canek, MemSource CEO, will give a webinar on Thursday, 15 March at 16:00 (CET) on Making Machine Translation Part of Your Everyday Translation Workflow.

This free webinar, co-hosted by GALA and MemSource, will examine the practical steps a translation agency or localization department needs to take to introduce machine translation into their everyday translation workflow.

Namely, it will cover:

  • Selecting the right machine translation technology
  • Reconciling MT with translation memory
  • Measuring MT quality
  • Modifying the existing workflows
  • MemSource post-editing analysis
  • Devising fair post-editing rates for all stakeholders

THE WEBINAR HAS ALREADY TAKEN PLACE. VIEW THE RECORDING.

Last week I held a webinar, titled “Making Machine Translation Part of Your Everyday Workflow“. The webinar has been recorded and posted on YouTube. It has been attended by over 90 people (mainly localization specialists working for translation agencies or translation buyers).

We ran three polling questions during the webinar and I would like to share the results here beacuse they are just very interesting. Although not fully representative, they provide a picture of where we are with machine translation today in the translation industry: Still a long way to go as one would expect.

To experience the way MemSource Cloud integrates machine translation into the everyday translation workflow, take a free trial. Or read about our post-editing analysis that provides insight into machine translation quality and usage at a segment level.

Question 1  (only 4% use MT for all of their translation projects)

Question 2 (over 70% have no control over MT use in their translation projects)

Question 3 (over 80% of MT users have no reliable way of measuring MT quality)

We Are Just Upgrading to MemSource Cloud 2.0

MemSource Cloud 2.0 Has Arrived

$
0
0

We have released MemSource Cloud 2.0 to all our customers on  April 12, 2012 at 8:30am GMT.

All MemSource users should install the latest version of MemSource Editor (1.39). Otherwise they do not need to take any special action. However, they should consider the following:

  • MemSource Cloud 2.0 features will only be available for new projects (created after the release of MemSource Cloud 2.0). Existing projects will not be affected by this release in any way and remain, of course, fully functional.
  • MemSource Plugin will not be supported any more for new projects. However, for projects created before the April 12, 2012, the Plugin will remain functional.
  • If you have not done so already, start using MemSource Editor instead of the Plugin. MemSource Editor requires the MXLIFF bilingual format, which you can download from any MemSource project via the Download button.
  • The bilingual DOCX format continues to be supported also in MemSource Cloud 2.0
If you have any questions, contact our support.

These are some of the new feature MemSource Cloud 2.0 brings:

Comments with Resolved/Unresolved Status

A commenting feature with comment status (resolved/unresolved) makes it much easier to share translator/reviser/customer feedback across all workflow steps.

Version Control and Translation Workflow

MemSource got version control and workflow management. A project manager can now set up a workflow for a project, e.g. translation -> revision -> sign-off. Even complex workflows can be managed in an easy and user-friendly way. (Workflow is only available in the Team edition).

Split Files Get Displayed in Projects

Split files get now displayed in projects just as any other translation jobs. And they can be analyzed, pre-translated, joined and even further split. In the image below, the file Highlights.pptx was split into three parts, each representing an autonomous translation job.

Better Quality Assurance

Additional checks to QA have been added and reporting has been improved. As a result of that a project manager can immediately see whether QA has been run or not on a translation job.  For each translation project a project manager can select which quality assurance checks are mandatory:

Better Segmentation

In MemSource Cloud 2.0 default or custom segmentation rules can be selected for a translation job.

Additional Improvements

And there are over a hundred additional small improvements…

XTRF Management Systems and MemSource Technologies have announced integration of their flagship translation products today. The integration provides for an easy import of MemSource analysis files in a .csv/.log format and the automatic preparation of quotes based on this data in XTRF.

XTRF Managing Director Andrzej Nedoma comments on the integration: “XTRF is a leading translation management system and we feel it is important to integrate with other leading products in the translation ecosystem. We have seen MemSource Cloud grow and gain in importance since its launch in early 2011, and therefore are glad that we can announce our integration today.”

MemSource Technologies CEO David Canek adds: “A number of our customers also use XTRF to manage their translation projects, therefore we thought it was only logical to integrate with XTRF’s leading translation management software. With today’s analysis file integration we are making the first step, deeper integration will follow.”

About XTRF

XTRF is one of the most resilient and most developed systems on the market for process management in corporate translation departments and translation agencies. XTRF is an innovative platform that supports the translation department, covering almost all areas of its activities including translation project and workflow management, customer and subcontractor management, invoicing support of sales activities, preparation of quotes and quality management.

Introducing the Linguist Portal in MemSource Cloud

$
0
0

Today at 8:15am GMT we have released version 2.2 of MemSource Cloud. The single biggest improvement is, no doubt, the Linguist Portal. Up until now, linguist users were not able to sign in to MemSource Cloud to e.g. see the list of translation jobs which were assigned to them. Typically, they would get their translation jobs emailed directly from the MemSource Cloud system. This worked fine but the need for linguist access to MemSource Cloud was there anyway.

Starting with today’s release, only notifications of new jobs will be emailed to linguists from MemSource Cloud and linguists will be able to sign in themselves to MemSource Cloud, accept the job, and download the MXLIFF file for translation. Once translated, they will be able to change the status of the job to “Completed by Linguist”. A project manager is notified by email whenever a linguist changes a translation job’s status. On top, linguists are able to join multiple files from a project in a self-service mode and a view an file analysis that a project manager has assigned to the linguist.

We have updated the Getting Started Guide for Linguists, which you can share with your linguist users and we will be releasing a video soon on the new features. TO LEARN MORE, VISIT OUR TODAY’S WEBINAR.

Important: Email Notifications

Email notifications will work correctly only if appropriate email templates have been set up in your organization’s account. Please make sure that under Setup – Email Templates there is a template of type “Job Assigned” and another of type “Job Status Changed“. It is highly recommended that existing MemSource users:

  1. Modify their existing “Job Assigned” template in line with the new Job Assigned Template
  2. Create a  new “Job Status Changed” email template, using this Job Status Changed Template

Learn more about email templates here.

Other New Features

  • Trados TTX files now import also with the corresponding TM match percentage displayed in MemSource Editor
  • TMX import has been optimized for some Trados TMX file formats (e.g. Trados tags are converted to MemSource tags for better leverage); the detection of a Trados TMX is automatic
  • Import of large Excel files have been significantly speeded up
  • Analysis of large files has also been speeded up
  • An analysis can be assigned to a linguist and in that way it will get displayed to the linguist in the Linguist Portal
  • New jobs cannot be created anymore in MemSource Cloud 1.0 projects (projects created before May 12, 2012)
  • The Bosnian local has been added (BS and BS_BA have been added)
  • Renaming of completed (target) files can be turned off under Setup – File Renaming

MemSource Cloud 2.4 was released on 3 September 2012. Read more about the new features below or watch a recording of a MemSource webinar that provided an overview of the new features (the 2.4 release includes over 100 improvements and bug fixes).

First, an Important UI Change

  • Introducing inactive menu buttons:
    • Until you select a file in your project, menu buttons (such as Download, Pre-translate, etc.) will be displayed as inactive (since we do not know to which file you want to apply that action). After selecting a file, the buttons will become active, so that you can download, analyze, pre-translate …  the selected file(s)

Buttons Inactive

Buttons Active

The New Features

  • Self-learning capability: MemSource will automatically suggest relevant linguists (only in the Team edition)
    • When assigning a job to a linguist, MemSource will suggest most relevant linguists automatically, based on the linguist’s previous jobs
    • The suggestion criteria can also be set and modified manually on the user’s detail page
  • Linguist users can be assigned custom roles, such as proofreader, editor, reviewer, checker, validator, post-editor, etc. (only in the Team edition)
  • Project managers and administrators can now create unlimited number of users and select which users will be active (only in the Team edition)

Unlimited Number of Users; Select Active Users

  • Linguists can now access a project’s term base in the linguist portal
    • By default linguists may edit “new” (not approved) terms
    • A project manager or administrator may, in addition, allow specific linguists to “edit and delete approved terms”, effectively promoting that linguist user to a terminologist
    • If multiple term bases are selected for a project, only the one in the write mode is displayed to the linguist in the linguist portal
  • Unapproved terms (“new” terms) are now displayed in gray in MemSource Cloud, so that they can be easily distinguished from approved terms that are displayed in black color font
  • Different translation memories can be assigned to workflow steps in a project (only in the Team edition)
    • Previously, all workflow steps in a project had to share identical translation memories. Now it is possible to assign different translation memories to different workflow steps in a project
  • Alerting a user to the status of the preceding workflow step (only in the Team edition)
    • If a preceding workflow step has not yet been completed, the user is alerted to this fact – the indicator of the number of segments confirmed turns red and a message is displayed, e.g. “previous workflow step not completed (85% confirmed)”
  • For locked jobs, confirming a segment or uploading to server is blocked
  • Email templates allow defining a cc email address (e.g. to copy all communication to an email archive)
  • When editing multiple jobs at once, users can now decide which specific fields should be batch updated and which should be left intact (these can be removed)
  • Improved deployment process
    • Minor MemSource releases (these are most frequent) get now deployed without any interruption to the MemSource Cloud service
  • New API calls have been added:

Systran and Microsoft Translator Hub Integrations, Additional APIs – MemSource Cloud 2.6 Release

$

0

MemSource Cloud 2.6 has just been released. This version includes over 120 improvements and bug fixes.

New Machine Translation Options

  • We have added new machine translation engines to which MemSource users can connect out of the box as well as new features
    • Systran is now supported out of the box in MemSource
    • Microsoft Translator Hub is also supported out of the box in MemSource, including the “feedback” option (see below)
    • We have also redesigned the user interface to handle MT; it is much easier now “create” new machine translation engines, configure specific MT domains, etc.
    • We have also introduced an optional “feedback” feature for MT engines that support this (e.g. Microsoft Translator Hub). When feedback is enabled, post-edited translations are sent to the MT engine to improve it
  • A new quality assurance check: ”No text between tags”
    • When there is no text between paired tags in the target but there is some in the source, a warning will get triggered in quality assurance
  • MXLIFF files can now be directly imported into MemSource translation memory, as if it was a TMX file
    • In fact the “Import TMX” button is used for this
    • This feature can be useful in many ways, e.g. in an emergency, when recovering a translation job gone wrong if you only have the MXLIFF file you are not able to generate a TMX file directly from MemSource Cloud
  • New API calls have been added, for instance:
    • Set Translation Memories
    • Get Translation Memories
    • Create Analysis (and get results)
    • Set Term Bases
    • Get Term Bases
    • Delete Project
    • MemSource wiki lists all MemSource APIs, including the related documentation
    • With the latest API additions, MemSource translation projects, jobs, translation memories and term bases can be efficiently managed from 3rd party applications
  • New configuration options have been added for HTML file imports
    • Break tags create a new segment
    • Non-HTML tags convert to MemSource tags
  • Text files (TXT, CSV, PROPERTIES…) are now always exported (after translation) in UTF8 character set
  • 101% matches can now be locked during pre-translation
    • When locked, segments may not be edited by a linguist user
    • A project manager or administrator may also manually lock/unlock segments in MemSource Editor
  • MemSource Cloud UI localization
    • Besides the existing Japanese, also Russian localization is now available (branded as “community translation”)
  • MemSource Web Editor
    • A completely web-based editor, an alternative to MemSource Editor, is now available to selected organizations
    • A public launch is not far away
  •  Launching and resolving QA warnings can be enforced
    • A new option is available under the Quality Assurance settings in a project: “Linguists may not set jobs with QA warnings to Completed”
    • When this option is selected, linguist users will not be able to set a job to the Completed status if QA was not launched or QA warnings have not been resolved or ignored
  • A linguist may set a job to the Completed status only if all segments are confirmed
  • ZIP file import improvement
    • When files get imported from a zip file, the path for each file is included (it is part of its name in the list of jobs, e.g. “…/dir/filename”)
  • New macros for email templates has been introduced
    • {jobs.count}
    • {jobs.newStatus}
    • Project managers can now get automated notification emails, such as “Project SomeName: 4 Jobs Completed
  • Clone
    • Projects can now be cloned via the new Clone button

Translate MemSource into Your Language

$
0
0

When signing up for a MemSource Cloud account, users can now select their preferred language. As you can see from the screenshot above, we currently offer just English, Russian and Japanese and the translations are described as “community translation.” This is because they have been provided by MemSource users.

As you may now, MemSource Cloud as a translation environment supports close to 300 languages. However, we only support 3 languages in our user interface. To change this imbalance, we have decided to open up MemSource UI to more languages. If you are interested to translate MemSource into your language, read on.

Who Qualifies

To qualify as a MemSource community translator, you should be familiar with MemSource Cloud and you should also be a native speaker of the language into which you intend to translate. All of this is of course made much easier thanks to the fact that most of our users are professional translators.

Volume

The translation volume is quite moderate and includes just MemSource Cloud user interface and not the documentation. The initial batch is approximately 4,000 words and after that there are just monthly updates (whenever there is a new version) that are typically around 200 words. The translation is done in a special account of MemSource Cloud that is provided to the translator.

Benefits

Instead of a cash payment, which would be very small because of the limited volume, we prefer to provide specific benefits to the translators, such as a free custom domain or other advantages related to the user’s MemSource Cloud account. An additional benefit that we have introduced recently is a link to the translator’s website. The link on the Setup page gets displayed to all MemSource Cloud users that have selected the given language. See an example for Russian below (as you can see the link message is not localized yet :)

 How to Get Started

Contact us at support@memsource.com and provide us with your MemSource username and language into which you would like to translate. Please note that currently we have 1 translator per language, so we may get out of stock soon for some languages :)

  • A new option has been introduced for XLIFF, SDLXLIFF, TTX: “Save confirmed segments to TM on import”
    • When selected, segments that get imported as confirmed (e.g. in-context matches, signed-off segments, etc.), get automatically saved into the project’s TM in the write mode

Project Management

  • Translation progress monitoring
    • Progress is now measured as the percentage of characters in confirmed segments
    • Previously the percentage was based on the percentage of confirmed segments which was less precise (there can be segments with a lot of text or very little text and that was not taken into account)

  • User-related metadata can now be hidden
    • There is a new option under project settings: “User metadata displayed to linguists in MemSource Editor”
    • This option is by default selected. If unselected, linguist users will not see any user-related metadata in MemSource Editor
    • This feature will work correctly in MemSource Editor 3.114 and above
  • Completing jobs with not confirmed locked segments
    • Previously, linguists were not able to confirm jobs that were locked and not confirmed. This is possible now.
  • Web Editor enabled for linguists (a global setting)
    • This setting was previously only possible to set for a specific projects
    • Now it is possible to set this option globally and it will affect all new projects
  • Email notifications setting
    • It is now possible to disable all email notifications for a project
    • This can be useful if MemSource is used via API and the customer has their own solution for email notifications
  • MemSource Editor version displayed for each user
    • When you go to your user list, a new column will be available, titled “Editor Version” that will provide details on the status of MemSource Editor version for each user (never used, very outdated, outdated, OK)

Other

  • A new credit card payment processor
    • We have introduced an additional credit card payment processor that will be used to primarily process credit card transactions when paying for MemSource
    • If you had problems with paying via PayPal, you can now try using the new method
    • We still keep PayPal for the time being
  • MemSource Cloud user interface localization

MemSource Cloud 3.5 Released

$
0
0

MemSource Cloud 3.5 has been released on Sunday, 14 July at 20:20 GMT. MemSource Cloud 3.5 includes over 60 improvements and bug fixes. Let’s have a look at the most important new features:

Project Management

  • 100 jobs displayed per page
    • Previously, MemSource would display 50 jobs per page in projects with 50+ jobs
    • We have raised this to 100 jobs per page now
  • Import of large batches of files faster
    • We have significantly speeded up the import of large batches of files (e.t. 100+ files) into MemSource Cloud
  • Update of segmentation rules  through XLSX
    • Previously, segmentation rules could be updated through SRX or CSV
    • While there is no change for SRX, the CSV format has been replaced by XLSX
    • We found XLSX is easier to handle for most users
    • Read more on segmentation in our documentation site

Tags

  • Tag numbering now spans across multiple segments
    • Previously, tag were numbered separately for each segment
    • The numbering is now configured per paragraph and can span across a multiple segments
    • This allows for higher flexibility when placing target tags in a different order from the source tags in joined segments
    • Tags that come from the same paragraph can now be placed in any order in a joined segment
    • MemSource Editor 3.121 or higher is required for this feature to function properly
    • The screenshot below compares the way tags were numbered previously (left) and in the new version (right). The difference in numbering can be spotted in segments 8 and 10:

HTML

  • New option for HTML files: Preserve whitespaces
    • Whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, newlines…) normally do not carry a lot of meaning in HTML files
    • That is why they will not get preserved in the target file
    • If you want to preserve whitespace characters, select the new option “Preserve whitespaces”

API

  • New API call: Pre-translate
    • The new pre-translate call makes it possible to batch pre-translate a job by calling api/v3/job/preTranslate
    • Read more on the pre-translate API call in our documentation

Aligner and More: MemSource Cloud 3.6 Release

$
0
0

MemSource Cloud 3.6 has been scheduled for release on Sunday, 18 August 2013 at 8:30 AM GMT. MemSource Cloud 3.6 includes over 100 improvements and bug fixes. These are the most important new features:

Aligner

  • With this release we are introducing a much-requested feature: an alignment functionality that makes it possible to create a translation memory from a translation (and its original) that was not processed through a CAT tool
  • To use this feature is simple:

Project Management

  • MemSource Cloud UI is also in Spanish now
  • New user detail page
    • We have introduced a new user detail page that, among other things, lists 30 most recent jobs assigned to the user
  • Delete all translations
    • The feature “Delete All Translations” will now delete all translation except locked segments
  • Filter by status in preceding workflow step
    • It is now possible to filter jobs by whether they are completed or not in the preceding workflow step

Translation Memory

  • Automated tag renumbering for higher leverage
    • For 99% TM matches because of different tag numbers from the segment for translation, we will automatically renumber the tags on the fly, so that the user gets a 100% match (in an analysis, TM search, pre-translation – simply everywhere).
    • For example, if your segment for translation is {1}Good {2}morning and the TM match is {2}Good {3}morning, you will get a 100% match now and will in fact see already the renumbered segment in TM results.
  • Export TM as XLSX, edit it and re-import it back
    • Translation memories can now be exported as XLSX, edited in MS Excel or similar application and re-imported back into MemSource
    • MemSource will update records that have been changed
  • Export only selected target languages
